ANNUAL CAR RALLY & TREASURE HUNT

SEPT 21, 2002

35 brave souls turned up at the Club House parking lot and formed teams in 10 cars for our Annual Car Rally & Treasure Hunt.

The Rally took the contestants miles and miles through several scenic and historic parts of Scarborough. They had to answer such taxing questions as “What sporting activity can you engage in between dawn and dusk?” and “Walls are covered with what?” They also had to follow exacting instructions such as “Head towards downtown Toronto” and solve a puzzle which required them to find places containing the word “Scarborough.”

Those who followed  the instructions successfully, arrived at a well known “watering hole” and waited for the rest of the entrants to get there. Refreshments and food were very welcome and much comparing of answers was observed. Some had brought boxes of treasures and were disappointed as none was required this year. This all helped pass the time until the organizers checked the Rally Sheets and determine which three contestants would have to fight out for the chance to run the rally next year. This being the first rule of entering the rally.

After much deliberation, which was a nail-biting time for all entrants,  three team captains, Ron Moore, Greg Candlish and Jean Kumar qualified for the play-offs. This was a time of great excitement, but then  to break the suspense, each captain choose a folded piece of paper with a position written on it, Greg Candlish screamed out  that he was the one to pick out the number 1 and therefore qualified to run the Rally next year with team of wife Bev(a one time club member), Tony & Ann Knox, (all long time participants in the rally and other club activities.)

Greg and his team got their choice of a range of amazing prizes, followed by Ron and his team and then Jean and her team, who were ecstatic by not being No 1, or so the grapevine has it.  Marlene’s team members were also awarded consolation prizes for having been overlooked for the play-offs.

The evening continued with a dart contest. The men and women each played separate elimination contests to decide a winner for each. The top man was George Thanagan and top lady was Bev Candlish. To decide CHPTC’s Champion Dart Player, these two had a play-off. This was a knock ‘em down, drag ‘em out fight to the end… a one dart, nearest the centre contest which Bev Candlish won! We will have to recruit Bev and Greg as members.

Whether driving, navigating, playing darts or just joining friends for the ride or the food, all participants assured the organizers that they had a wonderful time and were looking forward to more of the same next year.

The Car Rally is one of the many social events that Curran Hall Park Tennis Club organizes for its members and has enjoyed a faithful turnout for many years. A wonderful tribute to the fun loving members and their friends.

This years rally was organized by Ron & Glenn Sutherland with assistance from Tom & Marilyn Rice.
