October 30, 2011 Update The nets are down: Yes, the nets and windscreens came down today. The courts are now locked up for the winter. Team Giggie (Ed Giggie, Larry Briden, Gary Gonsalves and Ron Moore) took advantage of this sunny, dry and wind-free Sunday morning to get the job done (all of us feeling more than a tinge of regret - the perfect weather for putting away the nets and windscreens is also perfect for playing tennis outdoors!) Have a great winter, enjoy your indoor tennis if you play through the winter, and here's looking forward to seeing you all in the spring.

June 27, 2011 Update
Mixed
B & C Tournament
- We invite all members - who
play at B level or under to enjoy a great afternoon of competitive
tennis by signing up for the B & C Tournament. You are eligible to enter
if you do not play STF interclub matches at A1 or A2 level!. The
tournament will be held on Saturday July 9th from 12pm to 5pm.
$5.00 per person. No partner required.
Please sign up in the clubhouse or contact Raj @
905-668-8510 by Tuesday July 5th.
Court Repairs - Yes, the repairs got underway today! I dropped by the courts after work and the depression on court 1 has been leveled and the cracks on court 3 have been filled and taped. No progress on the court 2 crack or relocating the tubes that secure the net centre bands. I'll keep you posted
June 23, 2011 Update Two Reminders!: Court Repairs - Court Contractors have confirmed that the repairs will start Monday June 27. This means that all four courts will be unavailable until July 1. Remember that court repairs depend on good weather. Also - as is the case with any renovation project, some unanticipated problems may crop up - so please be patient if the repairs do take a little longer than 4 days. I will keep you updated. As far as I am concerned, these repairs don't come a moment too soon - the depression on court 1 was very slippery indeed last night when I was playing STF (as if the fog wasn't enough!) Kathi Moyer Team Tennis Charity Event - We have made our courts available (along with a number of other clubs) for this very worthwhile event on Saturday June 25 from noon to 6 pm. This means that all 4 courts will be in use for the team tennis event. Click here for a link to the flyer for this event, if you haven't seen it already. To those of you that are playing - good luck, have fun and enjoy the BBQ at the West Shore Community Centre!
June 5, 2011 Update Court Repairs - I am pleased to report that repair work on courts 1 and 3 will go ahead later this month, starting Monday June 27. Court 1 will have its depression levelled out (the one at the south end that is often wet and slippery). Court 3 will have its large crack repaired. The repair work is contingent on good weather and is estimated to take 4 days, during which time all 4 courts will be unavailable. The bad news is that club programs for the period June 27 to 30 must be either be cancelled, rescheduled or relocated - you will here more about the specifics of how each program is affected over the coming week or two. It is possible that the repairs could extend to July 1. Apologies for the inconvenience - the repairs can only proceed in good weather and there is no really good time to complete them, but they must get done! Click on the calendar tab on this page to see what programs are affected by the repairs
May 30, 2011 Update Daytime Drop-in Tennis - this new program got off to a wet start last Thursday morning (unfortunately it was rained out). I am now pleased to report that Daytime Drop-in Tennis is up and running! Just show up and play some tennis. When? - every Monday and Thursday 9:30 am to 11:30 am. On Mondays, two courts are available. On Thursdays, all four courts are available. For more information, contact Eileen & Al Tacilauskas (email) or phone 416-439-4458.
May 28, 2011 Update Mixed Lucky Draw - this very popular tournament is scheduled on Saturday June 11. You don't need a partner to sign up. The Mixed Lucky Draw starts at noon and ends at 6 pm - then there's dinner at 6:30 pm! Dinner is combined with New Members' Night. Click here for more information about the Mixed Lucky Draw New Members' Night - also on June 11. The evening starts with dinner at 6:30 pm (combined with the Mixed Lucky Draw) - then there's a round robin. If you're a new member, this is a great opportunity to mix and mingle with members -new and "old". If you're an "old' member - also a great opportunity to mix and mingle! More details to follow.
May 21, 2011 Update Adult Lessons - it's not too late to sign up for Adult Tennis Lessons with Anna Sullivan! They start next Sunday (May 29) Beginner lessons 5-6 pm, intermediate lessons 6-7 pm and advanced lessons 7- 8 pm. The 5 week lesson package costs $40. If you are interested, contact Christine Vaandering at 416-439-3277, or click here to send her an email
May 12, 2011 Update OTA and STF Members' Appreciation Day - these are two separate events! They're on the same day (Saturday May 28th) but in different locations as follows: OTA Members' Appreciation Day: At the Merchant of Tennis, from 10 am to 6 pm Click here for more information about OTA Members' Day STF Members' Appreciation Day: At RCS Sports, from 3 pm to 6 pm Click here for more information about STF Members' Day Remember! There are great deals to be had at both locations. You must bring proof of membership (shoe tag, membership card or, for OTA, your OTA registration card)
April 28, 2011 Update I have several news items for you today, so I'll do my best to be brief!: Kathi Moyer Team Tennis Charity Event - Curran Hall has joined up with 9 other clubs in Scarborough & Durham region (there may be more now!) to be part of this event that will benefit the Rouge Valley Health Care System. It takes place on Saturday June 25 (rain date June 26) - our courts will be used for team tennis play from noon to 5 pm. You can either enter as a team of 4 or as a single (the organizers will place you in a team at your playing level)
RCS Sports Warehouse Event When? Saturday, April 30th 9 AM to 7 PM Where? 31 Passmore Ave., Unit # 2, Toronto, ON M1V 3H4 (detailed map in the link below). There are always great deals to be had at these Warehouse Events. Interested? Click here for more details Local schools on the courts: At the Fall AGM we talked about marketing the club to the local schools- with a view to increasing our junior membership base. Well - the schools came to us and asked for couer time! On some weekday mornings during May & June kids from Heather Heights PS and Woburn Collegiate will be using the courts. Our new club Pro (Anna Sullivan) will be coaching the kids from Heather Heights (and promoting membership at the club!). This court time will be scheduled to avoid conflicts with any club activities such as Daytime Drop-In tennis. When I have specific dates I will post them on the website calendar.
April 27, 2011 Update Joan Wiley- I have another sad duty, I must inform you that Joan Wiley passed away this morning in the Scarborough General Hospital, after a battle with cancer. Joan was a familiar face at the club for many years. She was an energetic organizer and ran the Social Committee for a number of years (from 1999 to 2004). After this, Joan continued to be an active member of the social committee, always playing a key role in organization of the year-end Banquet, as well as Cards Night. Joan was also a keen tennis player. She was a long time member of the Sunday morning ladies group. I recall that Joan was my partner one year in the Mixed Lucky Draw tournament, and she carried us to victory! Joan - we will miss you. I regret that there is no visitation or funeral service for Joan.
April 10, 2011 Update Wes Hall- I have the sad duty of informing you that Wes Hall passed away on Thursday April 7. Wes was husband to Pat and father to Mary and John. As I am sure you know, Pat, Mary and John have been active tennis players at the club for many years. As far as I know, Wes was not a tennis player himself but I am sure that living with three avid and competitive players ensured that tennis was never far from his mind. Our thoughts are with Pat, Mary and John at this sad time .
Visitation times are Tuesday April 12th from 7 pm to 9 pm, and
Wednesday April 13th from 1pm to 2pm Pine Hills Cemetery is located at 625 Birchmount Road in Scarborough, just north of St Clair Avenue East.

April 3, 2011 Update 3 Announcements and two reminders: The tennis courts are open! - Yes, the nets are up, the combination lock has been set and loads of dead tree stuff has been removed from the courts. Many thanks to Ed Giggie and his maintenance team for a job well done: Gary Gonsalves, and myself. As always, the windscreens cannot go up until mid-May (they might blow the fence posts over if the ground hasn't had a chance to dry out) Friday Night Houseleague - there are now only five spots left on this popular house league - please sign up now of you want to play. Website (this one's an apology) - there has been a problem with the website. If you clicked on 2011 Membership Application in Forms & Information you got the 2010 Application form. However - all is not lost if you haven't yet submitted your membership application form: there is a spares list. If you are on this list - you may get called to play when players that are in the Competitive Doubles can't play on a particular Monday. If you would like to be a spare for the Monday Night Competitive Doubles, please indicate this on your application form, but please DO NOT send any activity fee ($15/session) at this time. Please indicate:
2011 Season (Welcome!) Feb 28, 2011 Update: Yes – it’s that time again. The 2011 tennis season is getting close, even though there is snow on the ground! The Application Forms and Information Letter for the 2011 Season are being mailed to you.Lots of you will receive your membership renewal information by email per your previous request. Tennis programs such as the Monday Night Competitive Doubles and the Friday Night House League fill up quickly. I urge you to submit your membership renewal as soon as possible. Please note that membership and program fees have increased, for the first time in many years. These increases were voted in at the Closing AGM, following a lively, and very timely, discussion about the need to restore balance to our club finances. We do our best to maintain the Club mailing list as up-to-date as possible. If you are not receiving tennis club email, and you would like to - please let me know! Conversely, if you do not want to receive tennis club email in future, please accept our apologies, and reply to let us know so that we can take your name off the list. 2010 Season - Final News Items December 26, 2010 Update First of all - I hope that you are all enjoying a happy and safe Festive Season. I have some more information about the celebration of Joan Traynor's life that will take place February 13, 2011 (please see my December 8 update for details) All are welcome to attend. If you would like to participate actively in the celebration (for example - say a few words), please contact Joan's husband, Trevor, before January 15, 2011. Trevor's phone # is 905-839-1733.
December 8, 2010 Update Update to yesterday's bereavement notice: I received the following information today. I would like to thank Tom Rice for his thoughtfulness in forwarding this to me so that I can share it with you:
On Sunday, February 13, 2011 there
will be a celebration of Joan's life from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the
Royal Canadian Legion, Highland Creek Branch 258, 45 Lawson Road,
Toronto, ON M1C 2J2 (just east of the Highland Creek Overpass,
opposite St. Dunstan of Canterbury Anglican Church)
December 7, 2010 Update Bereavement Notice: It is with deep regret I inform you that Joan Traynor has passed away after a long illness. Joan was a member of the club for many years. I will remember her for her kindness and great sense of humour. Our condolences go out to Trevor and family members.
November 14, 2010 Update Courts closed: Yes, the courts are closed until next season - the nets and screens have been taken down and locked away for the winter. Many thanks to team Ed Giggie - Gary Gonsalves, Glenn Sutherland and Al Tacilauskas for making this happen. Tennis at Curran Hall may be over until next spring - but your Executive doesn't take the winter off (well - not all of it). We are meeting in a few weeks to start the planning for next season...yes, it starts now! We need your help with the planning for nest season, so your input would be much appreciated on the following: - how can we better market the club and attract new members? As you may know, a increase in membership and program fees was approved at the Closing AGM in September. This was necessary because the club had been operating at a small loss for the last two years....don't worry - we are still financially sound, but we wanted to act now to restore our previous financial situation. Raising membership and programs fees will certainly help. Attracting new members will also help...that's why we welcome any ideas you may have to better market the club. Please contact me at rontmmoore@rogers.com or by phone at 416-283-8195 Enjoy your winter!. There are several places to play tennis indoors while you eagerly await the re-opening of Curran Hall next spring (eg Tam Heather, L'Amoreaux and Pickering Rec. Centre) If you help deciding where to play - I may be able to help (feel free to email or phone!) I look forward to seeing you next spring. Ron
