August 20, 2010 update

Recognition for a special group of volunteers:

I would like to take a moment to recognize the captains of our junior STF teams -

Denise Bacon (Boys A)

Glenn Sutherland (Boys B)

Mary Hall & Keith Opatowski (Girls)

I am doing this because I feel that many of you may not have an appreciation for  the great work done by these volunteers during the weeks of the Junior STF season. They give their time to ensure that our younger players get to play competitive tennis and have fun on a Saturday morning, win or lose. If you are the parent of a Junior STF team player, then I am sure that you already appreciate the team captains. If not, now you know who they are!

Denise, Glenn, Mary & Keith - Thank you!

June 26, 2010 Update

Mixed Lucky Draw and New Member's Night - unfortunately today's  rain washed out these events yet again. Tomorrow was to be the raindate (rain-raindate?) but the weather forecast is not good for then either. Therefore - we are rescheduling the Mixed Lucky Draw for Saturday July 10 - it can't rain on us again! More details to follow. At this time, we do not plan to reschedule New Member's Night, because of the very limited response to the event. The B/C tournament was to be held on July 10 - it will be rescheduled (more details to follow)

Junior Tournament - ALL MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE: The Mixed Lucky Draw wasn't the only event affected by the rain today. The STF Junior tournament was  scheduled to take place today, with Under 12 matches being played at Curran Hall this morning. Some matches were switched to the indoor courts at Tam Heather. However we now need to play matches at Curran Hall tomorrow. Therefore - all 4 courts are reserved tomorrow morning (Sunday June 27) from 8:30 to noon for U12 tournament matches. Thank you for your understanding

June 3, 2010 Update

We need help!:  Attention all you fun-loving tennis members….

We are urgently seeking a special “someone” who is willing to run / host/ delegate the annual Curran Hall Father’s day, “Gourmet Breakfast” on Sunday June 20.

There are quite a few “helpers” willing to help out, but we need one person to be in charge and run the event (breakfast and round robin)

This event is usually well attended and is a wonderful way to spend Father’s Day.

Please call Danielle Giggie at 416-281-6939 or e-mail at dgiggie@yahoo.ca if you can be this “someone”.  We don't want to cancel this popular event.

2010 Membership List: the new membership list is being printed - look out for copies in the clubhouse!

May 27, 2010 Update

Two Upcoming Events and one request:

Junior Opening Day -  a fun day for all our juniors! When: Saturday May 29 from 11 am to 2 pm. There's tennis, games, prizes, food and refreshments. No need to reserve a spot, just show up with your racquet.  Please contact Jeff Hanna (416-576-9198) if you need more details or if you are an adult and would like to help.

Rogers Cup - see the best men tennis players at the Rexall Centre, York University . When: August 7 to 15. Take advantage of the club discounts!. August may seem a long way off - but the tickets are already on sale. This is a very popular event -don't be disappointed!

Click here to see the flyer (use our code on the flyer to access the link - there's even a virtual tour of seating at the Rexall Centre!).

Here's the request: Every member  - junior, adult and senior:  Please help to keep our club beautiful by picking up trash when you see it on or around the courts and clubhouse. Please take your own trash home with you, or discard it in the bins next to the courts (don't forget to recycle! Ball cans and lids are recyclable) On the subject of lids - please take special care to dispose of the metal ring-pull lids that you remove from a new can of balls (they make that great sound!) - these lids are very sharp. If left lying around they are not only unsightly, they are also a cutting hazard to both people and animals.

NO HOUSELEAGUE TONIGHT: Unfortunately, the opening night of houseleague is cancelled for tonight, along with the BBQ. The weather has not co-operated at all! The houseleague captains are busy phoning their teams, as I type. There will be houseleague next Friday (May 14), but we do not have use of the clubhouse, because of City Programming, so the BBQ is rescheduled for Friday May 28 - a week after the Victoria Day holiday weekend

April 23, 2010 Update

Correction: My April 21 update, along with the email I sent out on April 21 both stated that the AGM was scheduled for April 21. I must have had April 21 on the brain. The AGM is on April 25 at 7:30 pm in the clubhouse. Many thanks to those of you that caught the error and emailed me!

RCS Warehouse Sale: Four dates - May 8,  9, 15 & 16. Great deals to be had at 31 Passmore Ave Unit #2! Please click here to see the flyer (it has a map!)

Monday Night Competitive Doubles -  As always, Monday Night Competitive Doubles is very popular! Both sessions are now full -  if you have signed up: that's great! If you have not yet signed up, and you want to play - there is still a chance. If you sign up for the spares list, there is a good chance (no guarantees!) that you will get a few calls  to sub in for regular players  - especially in July & August. SIgn up for the spares list now  - Contact person is Christine Vaandering

April 3, 2010 Update

The tennis courts are open! -  Yes, the nets are up, the combination lock has been set and wheelbarrow loads of dead stuff have been removed from the courts. Many thanks to Ed Giggie and his maintenance team for a job well done: Gary & Ryan Gonsalves, Larry Briden, Al Tacilauskas, Glenn Sutherland (and myself). Doug Purdie arrived a little later but he brought great news of the Chelsea - Man U result. It was nice enough to play tennis after the work was done! We WILL need a new tennis net this summer, so Ed will order one for us. As always, the screens cannot go up until mid-May (they might blow the fence posts over if the ground hasn't had a chance to  dry out)
